Scientists Create Solar Panel That Also Makes Electricity From Rain

Researchers at Institute of Materials Science of Seville have developed a new technology that can produce electricity from both sunlight and rainfall at the same time — a breakthrough scientists believe could change how small devices are powered in the future.

The team, made up of experts from Spain’s national research council and the University of Seville, created a special hybrid energy system that continues generating power even when the weather suddenly changes.

At the heart of the invention is an ultra-thin protective layer placed on advanced solar cells known as perovskite cells. These cells are already attracting worldwide attention because they are cheaper to produce than traditional silicon solar panels and can absorb sunlight very efficiently.

But there has always been one major problem.

Perovskite solar cells easily become damaged when exposed to moisture, heat and difficult weather conditions. That weakness has slowed efforts to use them widely in everyday energy systems.

Now, the Spanish researchers believe they may have found a solution.

Using plasma technology, the team designed a microscopic coating just 100 nanometres thick — so tiny it is almost impossible to see with the human eye. Despite its size, the coating performs several powerful jobs at once.

First, it protects the delicate solar cells from water, humidity and extreme temperatures. Second, it helps the panels absorb sunlight more effectively. But perhaps the most surprising feature is its ability to turn falling raindrops into electricity.

According to the researchers, the surface creates electrical charges when raindrops strike it. During testing, a single raindrop produced more than 100 volts of electricity — enough to power small portable electronic devices.

Scientists say the material remained stable even when fully submerged in water and was also able to keep simple LED circuits running continuously.

Researcher Carmen López explained that the project successfully combines solar technology with tiny rain-powered generators in one thin-film system.

The idea behind the invention is simple: while ordinary solar panels lose efficiency during cloudy or rainy weather, this system can still continue producing energy from the rain itself.

That could make it especially useful for outdoor electronics that need constant power without relying heavily on batteries.

The researchers believe the technology could play a major role in the growing world of smart devices and connected systems, often known as the Internet of Things.

Possible uses include weather stations, pollution monitors, agricultural sensors, bridge safety systems and remote monitoring devices placed in difficult-to-reach locations.

ICMS scientist Fernando Núñez said the technology may also work well in smart cities where outdoor equipment must survive harsh weather conditions while continuing to operate.

He added that the system could help power street signs, monitoring equipment, lighting systems and even remote marine stations far away from regular electricity networks.

The researchers say their work opens the door to stronger, self-powered electronic systems built specifically for outdoor use.

They believe the innovation proves that future energy devices do not have to depend on just one natural source. Instead, sunlight and rainfall can now work together to produce cleaner and more reliable electricity.
