AI-powered machines now fighting,
rescuing and defending on the battlefield
A major military shift is unfolding in Ukraine as the
country rapidly expands the use of robotic ground vehicles and artificial
intelligence on the battlefield, creating what many experts now describe as the
beginning of a new era of warfare.
What started as experimental military technology has quickly
grown into a full-scale system of “robot soldiers” carrying out dangerous
missions once handled only by humans.
In 2026 alone, Ukrainian forces are dramatically increasing
the deployment of unmanned ground vehicles, commonly known as UGVs, as the war
with Russia continues to push military technology into unfamiliar territory.
Military officials say the move is aimed at reducing
casualties and helping Ukraine manage the huge manpower gap between its forces
and the much larger Russian military.
Robots taking over frontline duties
The scale of the expansion has surprised even defence
analysts.
Ukraine plans to deploy around 25,000 ground robots during
the first half of 2026, with the long-term goal of allowing machines to handle
all frontline logistics operations.
The rise has been rapid.
In March 2026 alone, Ukrainian troops reportedly carried out
more than 9,000 robot missions — over three times the number recorded just a
few months earlier in late 2025.
These machines are no longer being used for simple transport
tasks.
The robotic systems, nicknamed “Iron Cossacks” by some
Ukrainian units, are now carrying ammunition, evacuating wounded soldiers,
planting mines, putting out fires and even attacking heavily defended enemy
positions.
Some have reportedly stayed active in combat zones for up to
45 days without direct human presence on the ground.
A world-first robotic assault
One development has especially caught global attention.
Ukraine recently claimed to have carried out the world’s
first successful assault and capture of an enemy position using only robots and
drones, without sending human infantry into the attack.
Military experts say this marks a major turning point in
modern warfare.
For decades, wars have depended heavily on boots on the
ground. Now, that traditional image is beginning to change as machines take on
larger combat roles.
Ukrainian commanders believe ground robots could eventually
replace up to one-third of soldiers operating in the most dangerous areas of
the battlefield.
Artificial intelligence becoming the
brain of war
Much of the power behind the new systems comes from advances
in artificial intelligence.
While many of the robots are still controlled remotely by
human operators, AI is increasingly being used to help machines navigate
difficult terrain, recognise targets and make split-second decisions.
Some Ukrainian drone systems already use machine vision
technology to identify different types of military vehicles and strike weaker
sections automatically.
One AI system attracting attention is known as Altarion,
which helps drones analyse targets with greater speed and accuracy.
Defence experts say future battlefields may eventually
contain more machines than human fighters.
Fast production driving the revolution
The speed of manufacturing has also become a key factor.
Some Ukrainian companies are reportedly producing as many as
30 robotic units every day to meet growing military demand.
The systems are now being integrated into more than 160
military units across the country, showing that robotic warfare is no longer
just a military experiment.
Instead, it is becoming a central part of Ukraine’s war
strategy.
Ethical fears grow alongside technology
Despite the military advantages, the rise of AI-powered
combat systems is also raising serious ethical questions around the world.
Critics warn that growing dependence on autonomous weapons
could create dangerous situations where machines make life-and-death decisions.
Campaigners against so-called “killer robots” fear the
technology may one day move beyond human control.
Supporters, however, argue that the systems are saving lives
by keeping soldiers away from deadly frontline battles.
Among Ukrainian troops, one phrase has become closely linked
with the robotic campaign: “Robots don’t bleed.”
As technology continues to transform conflict, Ukraine’s
battlefield may now offer the clearest picture yet of what future wars could
look like — faster, smarter, more automated, and increasingly fought by
machines rather than men.
