France captain Kylian Mbappe said his side failed to carry
out their tactical plan as they were beaten 2-0 by Spain in the semi-finals of
the 2026 World Cup.
Spain took the lead in the first half after Mikel Oyarzabal
converted an early penalty. Pedro Porro added a second goal after the break to
seal Spain's place in the final.
Speaking after the match, Mbappe said France's problems
began with the way they pressed their opponents.
"We were pressing three against two from the start, and
we got it wrong," he said. "Against Spain, you have to press man for
man."
The France captain said the team did not execute the
approach agreed before the game and admitted that proved costly.
"When you don't do what you're supposed to do in a
World Cup semi-final, you don't win," Mbappe said.
He added: "We did not do what it takes to reach the
dream, to reach the World Cup final."
Spain's victory ended France's hopes of reaching another
World Cup final, while Mbappe's comments pointed to tactical errors as a key
reason for the defeat.
