The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra
State has launched a fresh effort to resolve its internal leadership dispute by
setting up a five-member fact-finding committee charged with finding lasting
solutions to the crisis affecting the party.
The decision emerged
from a stakeholders' meeting held in Abuja at the instance of the party's National
Organising Secretary, Barr. Emeka Okafor. Party leaders said the committee
would engage members across the state, examine the issues behind the prolonged
disagreement and recommend practical steps to restore peace and strengthen the
party.
Chief Azuka Okwuosa was
named chairman of the committee, while Dr Mrs Oby Orah will serve as secretary.
Other members are Chief Basil Iwuoba, Hon. Dr Justin Nwankwo and Prince Tony
Ezeimo.
According
to the committee's terms of reference, members are expected to consult widely
with party stakeholders, including state executives, local government and ward
officials, women, youths and other interest groups before presenting
recommendations aimed at promoting unity, strengthening internal democracy and
improving the party's chances in future elections.
The
stakeholders' meeting also adopted a 13-point communiqué reaffirming their
commitment to the unity, progress and electoral success of the APC in Anambra.
Participants agreed that while efforts continue to address the party's internal
disagreements, members should remain focused on delivering maximum support for
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Speaking
at the meeting, Barr. Emeka Okafor assured members that the national leadership
remained committed to helping the Anambra chapter overcome its challenges. He
said genuine reconciliation would require open engagement with all sides and a
willingness to place the party's interests above individual ambitions.
Former
Senator Uche Ekwunife also called for sincere reconciliation among party
members. She urged leaders to move beyond words by rebuilding trust through
honest dialogue, mutual respect and issue-based politics, while encouraging
greater grassroots mobilisation ahead of future elections.
Proceedings
were moderated by Barr. C. J. Chinwuba, who reminded participants not to
discuss matters already before the courts, saying such issues were sub judice.
Instead, he encouraged contributions that would promote reconciliation and
provide realistic solutions to the party's challenges.
Before
the meeting began, security personnel intervened after a group of individuals
reportedly attempted to enter the venue without accreditation. Organisers
alleged that some of those involved were expelled party members who had not
been invited. They also claimed that Hon. Ifeanyi Osegbo and Hon. Arinze Awogu
arrived with a large number of people, some of whom presented invitation cards
that were not recognised by the organisers and whose names did not appear on
the accredited attendance list.
Security
officials later escorted the unaccredited individuals from the venue, allowing
the meeting to continue without further disruption.
At the close of the meeting, stakeholders appealed to all
APC members in Anambra to avoid actions capable of worsening divisions and
instead support ongoing efforts to restore confidence, unity and stability
within the party. They expressed hope that the newly constituted committee
would help lay the foundation for a more cohesive APC ahead of the 2027
elections.
