FIFA has launched a disciplinary investigation following
chaotic scenes that erupted after Spain defeated Argentina in the 2026 FIFA
World Cup final.
The world football governing body announced it is examining
a series of incidents involving players and coaching staff from both teams
after the final whistle, following reports of possible breaches of its
disciplinary rules.
Spain secured the biggest prize in world football with a
dramatic 1-0 victory, thanks to Ferran Torres' extra-time winner in the 106th
minute. The match had already been filled with tension after Argentina
midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off in the 90th minute by referee Slavko
Vinčić for a foul on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí.
The drama continued after the game ended. Video footage
circulating online appears to show Argentina defenders Leandro Paredes and
Nahuel Molina striking Spain players Eric García and Rodri during the
confrontation. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also seen appearing
to hit Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.
In a statement, FIFA confirmed that its Disciplinary
Committee had appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine the
incidents.
The organisation said the decision followed a review of the
official match reports and was made in line with Article 36 of the FIFA
Disciplinary Code. It added that the investigation would determine whether any
disciplinary rules had been broken.
FIFA said no further details would be
released until the prosecutor completes the investigation and submits a report.
The findings could determine whether any players or officials face sanctions
over their actions after one of the most dramatic World Cup finals in recent
history
