Former Secretary to the Benue State Government (SSG), Prof.
David Salifu, has died after reportedly suffering gunshot injuries during an
attack by suspected kidnappers while travelling to Makurdi.
According to reports, the incident happened on Thursday in
Wukari, Taraba State. Prof. Salifu was said to have been on his way to Benue
State when armed men believed to be kidnappers intercepted his journey.
Although he reportedly managed to escape from the attackers, he sustained
gunshot wounds during the encounter. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in
Makurdi, where doctors battled to save his life. Sadly, he was confirmed dead
later that Thursday night.
The tragic development has sparked fresh concern over the
growing insecurity affecting major highways and communities across parts of the
country, where travellers continue to face threats from criminal gangs. Prof.
Salifu, a respected academic and former top government official in Benue State,
was widely known for his contributions to public service. His death has left
many shocked as family members, friends and associates await more information
about the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the
incident, and the full details remain unclear as investigations continue.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Benue State Police Command were
unsuccessful, as calls to the Police Public Relations Officer were not answered
at the time of filing this report.
Security agencies are expected to provide further updates as
investigations progress, while many Nigerians continue to call for stronger
measures to tackle kidnapping and violent attacks on highways across the
country.
