The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Taraba
State and unveiled a new online registration system that will allow first-time
voters to register without visiting any of its offices.
The electoral body announced that the registration exercise,
which was due to end on Friday, July 10, will now continue until Sunday, July
26, 2026. It said the decision followed a nationwide review of the exercise and
was taken to ensure that more eligible Nigerians have enough time to register
before future elections.
INEC said the extension reflects its determination to make
the voter registration process more inclusive by giving every qualified citizen
a fair chance to be added to the national voters' register.
The commission also revealed that a self-service
registration platform for first-time voters will become available from
Wednesday, July 8. The new digital service can be accessed through the official
CVR portal and is designed to make registration faster and more convenient.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Head of Voter
Education and Publicity Department in Taraba State, Ngunan Rachael Iyongo, INEC
explained that eligible Nigerians would be able to complete their voter
registration, including biometric capture, using their smartphones, laptops or
desktop computers instead of travelling to an INEC office.
The commission added that users would find a simple
step-by-step guide on the portal to help them complete the process without
difficulty.
INEC called on all eligible residents of Taraba State who
are yet to register to make good use of the extra time and embrace the new
online registration option.
The electoral commission maintained that it remains
committed to delivering a transparent, credible and technology-driven voter
registration process that will encourage wider participation in Nigeria's
democratic process and ensure that more citizens are able to exercise their
right to vote.
