Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate
Peter Obi has said Nigeria can achieve lasting prosperity if it is led by
people who are competent, accountable and committed to serving the public.
Obi made the remarks after taking part in a high-level
roundtable discussion, Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond, organised by the
European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, Germany. He shared details of
the event in a post on his official X account on Tuesday.
According to Obi, the discussions centred on Nigeria's
democratic future beyond the 2027 elections, development cooperation,
international relations and ways to strengthen partnerships that could support
economic growth and national development.
He said participants showed strong interest in Nigeria's
future and its role in the global community. The meeting brought together
policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, representatives
of international organisations and members of the international media.
During the discussions, Obi said he maintained that Nigeria
already has the human and natural resources needed to become a prosperous,
secure and globally competitive country. He argued that the country's greatest
challenge is leadership rather than a lack of potential.
"What is required is competent, accountable, and
compassionate leadership that prioritises investment in people, education,
healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law, and strong institutions
over politics of consumption," Obi said.
He also called for deliberate policy choices that would
shift Nigeria from what he described as a consumption-driven economy to one
focused on production and sustainable growth.
According to him, embracing good governance, fiscal
responsibility and productive partnerships with the international community
would help build an economy that benefits all Nigerians while improving the
country's global standing.
Obi added that Nigeria's future remains promising if leaders
make decisions that promote unity, reduce poverty and encourage investment in
productive sectors of the economy.
He thanked the European Council on Foreign Relations for
inviting him to the event, saying such international engagements provide
valuable opportunities to deepen cooperation, exchange ideas and strengthen
partnerships that can contribute to Nigeria's long-term development.
