Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC)
presidential candidate Peter Obi
on Wednesday held a meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, adding fresh attention to ongoing political
discussions ahead of the 2027 general election.
The meeting became public after Obi's photographer, Esther Umoh, shared photographs on X.
In a short message accompanying the images, she simply confirmed that Obi had
met with the former president earlier in the day.
The visit comes just days after Obasanjo's former Political
Adviser, Akin Osuntokun, said
the former president played a major role in bringing Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso together ahead of the
2027 presidential race. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television,
Osuntokun rejected claims that Obasanjo was quietly backing President Bola Tinubu.
Instead, he maintained that the former president had been
instrumental in encouraging opposition figures to work together as preparations
for the next election continue.
The meeting also follows recent political developments
involving Obi, who left the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso. The pair cited
internal divisions and ongoing court cases within the ADC as the reasons for
their decision, a move that has continued to reshape conversations around the
emerging political alliances ahead of the 2027 polls.
