The retirement of Assistant
Inspector-General of Police Ikioye Orutugu was marked with heartfelt tributes
and colourful ceremonies across Anambra State, as government officials,
security agencies and members of the public gathered to celebrate a policing
career that spanned decades and left a lasting mark on the state.
Although recently elevated to
the rank of Assistant Inspector-General, Orutugu has now formally retired from
the Nigeria Police Force after completing his tenure as Commissioner of Police
in Anambra. His departure was commemorated through a series of events that
combined official recognition with personal celebration, including his birthday
and farewell ceremonies.
The week-long activities opened
on Monday, August 3, with a birthday gathering attended by senior officers from
sister security agencies, government representatives, traditional rulers,
religious leaders and other respected personalities. The occasion provided an
opportunity for guests to offer prayers, goodwill messages and warm wishes as
the retired police chief prepared to begin a new chapter after years of public
service.
The celebrations gathered
further momentum the following day when the Anambra State Government organised
a special send-off during the State Executive Council meeting. The ceremony
recognised Orutugu's contribution to strengthening security and maintaining
peace during his time in charge of the state police command.
Governor Chukwuma Charles
Soludo used the occasion to commend the retired officer for what he described
as exceptional leadership and professionalism. According to the governor,
Orutugu's approach to policing encouraged stronger cooperation between the
police and local communities while also improving collaboration among different
security agencies operating across the state.
The governor also noted that
the former commissioner consistently engaged community leaders, government
institutions and other stakeholders in tackling security challenges. He said
that strategy played an important role in supporting the fight against crime
and improving public confidence in security efforts across Anambra.
The final and most symbolic
event came with the traditional pull-out parade held at the Anambra State
Police Command Headquarters in Awka. The ceremony, rich in the customs of the
Nigeria Police Force, formally brought Orutugu's long career to a close in the
presence of serving and retired police officers, family members, government
officials, traditional rulers, friends and other invited guests.
Dressed in ceremonial regalia,
officers took part in the parade as honours were rendered to the retiring
senior officer. The event featured the inspection of guards, a ceremonial
procession and other long-established police traditions that have become
synonymous with bidding farewell to distinguished officers leaving active
service.
Throughout the ceremony,
speakers reflected on Orutugu's years in uniform, describing him as an officer
who remained committed to professionalism, discipline and community-focused
policing. Many praised his operational achievements and his efforts to build
lasting partnerships with stakeholders in tackling security concerns.
In a statement issued on
Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, SP Tochukwu
Ikenga, expressed appreciation to the state government, sister security
agencies, traditional institutions, religious organisations and residents for
the support they gave the command during Orutugu's tenure as Commissioner of
Police.
The command said such
cooperation contributed significantly to the security progress recorded in the
state and acknowledged the role played by various groups in helping the police
carry out their responsibilities more effectively.
While wishing the retired
Assistant Inspector-General good health, fulfilment and success in the years
ahead, the police also reassured residents that the command remains committed
to protecting lives and property. It said the progress achieved over the years
would serve as a strong foundation as officers continue working with
communities to keep Anambra safe and secure.
