Singer calls for a free and credible governorship poll as Osun prepares to vote
By Eugene Ora
Afrobeats star David Adeleke, better known as
Davido, has warned President Bola Tinubu that he will draw the attention of
United States President Donald Trump if the forthcoming Osun State governorship
election is not conducted fairly.
The singer made the remark during a live online
session with comedian Carter Efe, where he stressed the need for a peaceful,
transparent and credible election. He said he would not keep quiet if there
were any issues with the voting process.
"I will involve Trump if anything goes
wrong in the Osun election," Davido said, adding that he would ensure any
alleged irregularities received international attention.
The warning comes as political activities gather
pace ahead of the 15 August governorship election in Osun State. The
poll will see Governor Ademola Adeleke seeking a second term in office.
Davido has been one of the governor's most
visible supporters throughout the campaign. Ademola Adeleke is the singer's
uncle, and the award-winning musician has regularly joined campaign activities
while urging voters to support his re-election bid.
He has also repeatedly appealed to the relevant
authorities to ensure that the election is conducted in a free, fair and
transparent manner.
Although Davido did not explain how he intended
to involve the US president, his comments have added to the growing public
attention surrounding the election, which is expected to be closely watched
both within and outside Osun State. As campaigning enters its final stretch,
attention is now turning to the conduct of the poll and the ability of
electoral authorities and security agencies to deliver a peaceful and credible
exercise.
