Thirty governors elected on the platform of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) will not be enough to secure President Bola
Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential running mate of the
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said.
Kwankwaso argued that the performance of many of the APC
governors had weakened their ability to campaign effectively for the president,
insisting that their numbers should not be mistaken for an assurance of
victory.
The former Kano State governor made the remarks on Thursday
at a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he pointed to the
defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan while still in office as evidence
that incumbency does not guarantee electoral success.
“Jonathan was the sitting president, and he lost the
election. Those who think that because they have more than 30 governors, they
cannot lose are making a very big mistake,” Kwankwaso said.
He questioned the record of the APC governors, saying their
alleged poor performance could make it difficult for some of them to openly
campaign for Tinubu.
“The trend is that those governors and their parties have
performed woefully,” he said.
Kwankwaso added that some governors would struggle to defend
their records before voters, arguing that their performance in office had
fallen short “from top to bottom”.
“It is difficult for many of them to even come out and
campaign because, from top to bottom, they did absolutely nothing,” he said.
His remarks placed the 2027 contest in the context of past
elections in which political control of government did not prevent an incumbent
from losing power.
