Free EV Workshop to Prepare Transport Sector for Cleaner Future

Anambra State has begun a three-day training programme to equip transport workers, mechanics, students and other stakeholders with practical skills for operating and maintaining electric vehicles.

The free Electric Vehicle Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Workshop began on Thursday, 17 September 2026, at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka and runs until Saturday.

Organised by the Anambra State Ministry of Transport in collaboration with EV Automobile Limited, the programme covers electric vehicle operation, charging, maintenance and repair.

More than 1,000 participants attended the opening, including transporters, mechanics, students and road safety personnel, highlighting growing interest in electric mobility and its implications for the transport sector.

Commissioner for Transport Edward Ibuzo said the training was part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo's efforts to equip young people with practical skills that could create employment and business opportunities.

He urged participants to make the most of the programme, particularly its practical lessons, as electric vehicles become part of the changing transport landscape.

Ibuzo described transportation as vital to the national economy and said electric vehicles could cost less to maintain than petrol-powered vehicles.

Managing Director of EV Automobile Limited, Obiora Okafor, explained electric vehicle charging methods and encouraged young people to acquire skills that could improve their employment prospects and contribution to society.

Okafor said petrol-powered vehicles have almost 2,000 moving parts, compared with about 35 in electric vehicles, a difference he said contributes to lower maintenance costs for electric models.

He also described Nigeria as a country with abundant gas resources and said the nation needed to adapt to cleaner energy, while commending the Federal Government for decentralising the power sector.

The training aligns with Anambra's stated policy of encouraging cleaner fuels for automobiles and developing a modern, safer and more sustainable transport system.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Esther Onyekesi, attended the opening, which also featured a question-and-answer session on electric vehicle technology.

The programme will continue until Saturday, 19 September, providing participants with practical exposure to electric mobility and the skills needed as vehicle technology evolves.
