Anambra Warns Residents Over Flood Risk

Anambra State Government has urged residents to prepare for possible flooding after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, identified the state among areas likely to record above-normal flooding this year.

The warning is linked partly to Anambra’s location within the delta belt, which leaves parts of the state exposed to flooding during periods of heavy or prolonged rainfall.

Through the Ministries of Information and Value Reformation and Environment, the government said it was taking proactive steps to reduce the possible impact and protect lives and property.

Officials, however, said residents also have an important role to play, urging Ndi Anambra to remain vigilant and take NiMet’s forecast seriously throughout the rainy season.

The government advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours, whether on foot or by vehicle, as severe rainfall can create dangerous conditions and make movement difficult.

Residents in flood-prone locations were also advised to take appropriate precautions, including relocating where necessary if rising water threatens their homes, families or personal safety.

The authorities further urged residents to seek assistance promptly during emergencies rather than waiting for conditions to deteriorate, stressing the need for both individual caution and community cooperation.

The state government said its response was designed to anticipate the possible effects of flooding rather than wait until communities were already facing serious disruption or danger from rising water.

It reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Anambra while calling for maximum public cooperation, particularly from residents in areas vulnerable to flooding during the rainy season.

The advisory comes as residents are being encouraged to treat severe weather warnings as practical safety information, with early action potentially helping families avoid unnecessary exposure when heavy rainfall occurs.

Government officials said continued vigilance would remain important throughout the rainy season, urging residents to respond responsibly to changing weather conditions and seek help quickly whenever emergencies arise.
