The Enugu State Police Command says it detained 6,240
suspects and rescued 211 kidnapped victims during 17 months of sustained
security operations across the state.
The command also recovered 156 firearms, 1,486 rounds of
assorted ammunition and 209 vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles linked to
various offences during the period.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa disclosed the figures on
Friday when he received Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, AIG
Miller Dantawaye, who visited the command on a working tour.
The figures cover the period since Giwa assumed office as
Enugu Commissioner of Police on 11 March 2025, according to police spokesman SP
Daniel Ndukwe.
Of the suspects detained, police identified 158 as
kidnapping suspects, 186 as armed robbery suspects and 188 as murder suspects.
Another 57 suspects were detained over alleged rape and
defilement, while 273 were linked to cult-related offences and 63 to unlawful
possession of firearms.
The remaining 5,315 suspects were detained over various
other offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism, the commissioner
said.
Among the weapons recovered were 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3
assault rifle, alongside other firearms seized during police operations across
the state.
Giwa attributed the results to sustained intelligence-led
operations, proactive policing and closer security cooperation with
neighbouring states.
He said the command had also deployed its Violent Crime
Response Unit and stepped up border patrols through the Inspector-General of
Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative.
Emergency response, he added, had been strengthened through
the Distress Response Squad and the command’s Command-and-Control Centre,
helping officers respond more quickly to security incidents.
The commissioner, however, appealed for continued support
from the police zone, particularly with manpower, operational logistics and
personnel welfare.
He said stronger institutional support would enable the
command to build on the progress recorded and sustain its security operations
across Enugu.
Responding, Dantawaye urged officers and personnel to
maintain professionalism, discipline and accountability while observing Force
regulations and respecting the rights of citizens.
The AIG also called on the command to remain committed to
its constitutional responsibilities and protect public confidence, assuring the
officers of his readiness to support efforts to further strengthen security in
Enugu State.
