Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged
Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri communities in Anambra East Local Government Area of
Anambra State to end their hostilities, warning that further violence would
deepen hardship and destroy lives and livelihoods.
Obi made the appeal in a statement published on his official
X handle, expressing sadness over reports of clashes between the neighbouring
communities and calling for an immediate end to the confrontation.
He said continued violence would achieve nothing beyond
destruction at a time when many Nigerians were already struggling with
worsening economic pressures and difficulties meeting their basic needs.
“I am deeply pained by the reports of hostilities between
the good people of Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri in Anambra East LGA of Anambra
State,” Obi said, urging both communities to step back from further
confrontation.
The former presidential candidate warned that the
consequences of continued fighting would extend beyond the immediate loss of
life, affecting homes, livelihoods and families already dealing with the
pressures of daily survival.
He appealed to residents of both communities to pursue
peaceful ways of addressing their differences, stressing that no grievance,
regardless of how serious, could justify the destruction caused by violence.
“Let us choose dialogue over violence, reconciliation over
revenge, and peace over destruction. There is always a better way to resolve
our differences,” Obi said, calling on community leaders to help restore calm.
He concluded by asking God to grant wisdom to the leaders
involved and bring peace to Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri, as the communities face
the need to resolve their differences without further bloodshed.
