Mikel Arteta has taken Arsenal F.C. back among Europe’s elite and, in the process, matched one of the greatest achievements in the club’s modern history.
The Arsenal boss has now equalled the European record of legendary former manager Arsène Wenger by guiding the North London club to the UEFA Champions League final and delivering back-to-back semi-final appearances. For many Arsenal supporters, it feels like the return of a sleeping giant.
The club had not reached a Champions League final since 2006, when Wenger’s side lost narrowly to FC Barcelona in Paris. For years afterwards, Arsenal struggled to compete regularly with Europe’s top sides. But Arteta has changed the mood completely.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the journey behind it. When Arteta took over in 2019, Arsenal were a side lacking direction, confidence and consistency. The squad needed rebuilding, the connection with supporters had weakened, and the club had drifted away from Europe’s biggest conversations.
Fast forward to today, and Arsenal look transformed. The team now plays with belief, energy and a clear identity. There is structure in defence, intelligence in midfield and confidence in attack. More importantly, there is unity throughout the club again.
This season alone, Arsenal have won 42 of their 59 matches in all competitions — numbers that underline just how far the team has come under Arteta’s leadership. In the Premier League title race, they remain strong contenders and still have a real chance of ending their long wait for another domestic crown.
That wait has stretched since 2004, the year Wenger guided the famous “Invincibles” to the title without losing a single league match. Since then, Arsenal fans have endured disappointment, frustration and years of rebuilding. Arteta is now giving them genuine hope again.
Perhaps the biggest sign of progress is that Arsenal no longer look like outsiders hoping for success. They now appear to belong among Europe’s best teams. Young players have matured, experienced stars are delivering in big moments, and the manager has created a mentality capable of competing at the highest level.
Arteta may still be writing his story, but one
thing is already clear: he has restored belief at Arsenal. And if this
remarkable season ends with silverware, it could become one of the defining
eras in the club’s proud history.
