Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged members of
the African Democratic Congress to choose experience, competence and nationwide
political strength over online popularity as the party prepares for the 2027
presidential election.
Speaking through his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said
Nigeria’s current situation demands a leader with proven ability and not
someone carried mainly by excitement on social media platforms.
According to him, the country is facing too many serious
challenges for the opposition party to gamble with an inexperienced candidate.
He pointed to rising hardship, worsening insecurity, growing debt and weakening
public institutions as reasons the ADC must be careful in selecting its
presidential flagbearer.
Atiku stressed that the next election should not be treated
as an experiment, warning that Nigeria cannot afford another administration
learning how to govern after getting into office.
The former vice president also appeared to criticise the
growing hype around some political hopefuls, saying online applause does not
automatically translate into electoral success or effective leadership.
He argued that presidential elections are won through solid
political structures, strategic planning and the ability to govern, not through
digital trends or loud support on the internet.
In his words, the ADC must present a candidate Nigerians can
trust to handle the nation’s problems from the first day in office rather than
someone whose appeal exists mainly on social media.
Atiku described the party’s coming decision as a major
moment in Nigeria’s political future, saying delegates carry a heavy
responsibility because of the difficult state of the nation.
He said the real issue before the party should be
identifying the person with the capacity to lead the country out of its
economic and security troubles and restore hope to citizens.
The former vice president added that Nigeria needs a leader
with practical experience in managing national issues, building alliances,
attracting opportunities, creating jobs and engaging effectively at the global
level.
He maintained that only a tested and prepared candidate can
successfully steer the country towards recovery and national renewal ahead of
2027.
