Peter Obi has called on members of the Nigeria Democratic
Congress (NDC) who lost out in the party’s presidential primary to accept the
outcome and avoid bitterness, saying the focus should now be unity and
preparing for the 2027 general elections.
He made the appeal during the party’s second National
Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja where senior leaders,
lawmakers, state chairmen and other stakeholders gathered to review the party’s
progress.
Obi a former governor of Anambra State and the NDC
presidential candidate asked members to put aside personal disappointment from
the primaries and work together to build what he described as a strong and
credible political platform that can respond to Nigeria’s many challenges.
He also apologised for the late start of the meeting
acknowledging the patience of those who attended.
According to him the NDC is still a relatively young
political party but one that has made notable progress in a short time having
successfully conducted congresses conventions and primaries within about 90
days.
He said internal democracy must be respected stressing that
every contest produces both winners and those who fall short but what truly
matters is how members respond afterwards.
“I want to sincerely appeal to all our aspirants who
participated in the primaries to accept the outcomes in good faith In every
democratic process there will be winners and there will be those who do not
succeed What matters is what we do after the process” he said.
He reaffirmed that the party’s strength will depend on
cooperation discipline and shared purpose as it prepares for the 2027 elections
urging members to remain focused on building trust with Nigerians and avoiding
internal divisions that could weaken their chances at the polls ahead.
He said politics must never overshadow national interest and
unity forward
