A tense night in Osogbo has left residents shaken after the
chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area, Asimiyu Ajibola,
also known as Baba Isila, was attacked and shot by armed men.
The incident happened on Wednesday night around 9:50pm near
the MDS area, close to the Osogbo Community Bank axis in Osogbo. According to
eyewitness accounts, the attackers opened fire on a blue Toyota Corolla
carrying Ajibola and others as they drove through the area.
Witnesses said the gunmen were on a motorcycle and chased
the vehicle, firing repeatedly in what appeared to be a planned attack. The
sudden sound of gunshots sent panic through the neighbourhood, with people
running for safety.
One of the survivors said they had no warning before the
attack began, describing how bullets were sprayed at their car as they tried to
escape. In the confusion, the victims managed to flee and rushed to the Dugbe
Divisional Police Station for protection while the attackers disappeared into
the night.
Ajibola was later taken to the University of Osun Teaching
Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for his injuries. Medical staff say
he is currently in stable condition and responding to care.
The Osun State Government condemned the attack, calling it
disturbing and unacceptable. Information Commissioner Kolapo Alimi urged security
agencies to carry out a full investigation and ensure those responsible are
arrested and punished. He also suggested that the incident may have political
undertones, though nothing has been confirmed.
Police in Osun State have already launched a detailed
investigation. A spokesperson said officers responded quickly, moved the victim
to hospital, and have begun forensic work using evidence recovered at the
scene.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale manhunt
for the suspects, directing tactical teams to track them down and bring them to
justice.
Residents remain on edge as investigations continue into
what is being treated as a suspected attempted murder.
