Senator Victor Umeh, the Senator representing Anambra
Central Senatorial Zone in the National Assembly, has called for a free, fair
and credible 2027 general election, insisting that Nigerians alone should
determine who leads the country through the ballot box.
Speaking
at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, during a town hall meeting
hosted by the member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency,
Hon. Lilian Oby Orogbu, Umeh said the next general election could become a
defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy.
The
event, held at the institution’s ASUU Hall, brought together members of the
university community and political stakeholders.
Addressing
journalists on the sidelines of the gathering, the senator stressed that
citizens deserve quality leadership at every level of government and should
never be denied the opportunity to freely choose their representatives.
He
warned against electoral manipulation, vote buying, intimidation, political
violence and other practices capable of undermining the will of the people.
According
to him, politicians must abandon desperate attempts to gain power at all costs
and instead allow democracy to function as it should.
Umeh
maintained that if Nigerians choose to give President Bola Ahmed Tinubu another
term in office in 2027, that decision should emerge from a transparent and
credible electoral process.
For
him, what matters most is not who wins, but whether the choice genuinely
reflects the wishes of voters.
The
senator said the country must create an atmosphere where citizens can vote
freely without fear, pressure or interference. He argued that elections should
be decided by votes rather than political manoeuvring behind the scenes.
Looking
ahead to 2027, Umeh described the election as a major test of Nigeria’s
democratic maturity, expressing hope that every vote would count.
He
also spoke about the growing influence of NDC presidential hopeful Peter Obi,
saying the former Anambra governor remains a significant political force
following his performance in the 2023 presidential election.
According
to Umeh, continued discussions about Obi by figures within the current
administration suggest that he remains a strong factor in Nigeria’s political
calculations.
The
senator urged eligible voters to participate actively in the electoral process
and support candidates capable of improving living conditions, addressing
economic hardship and ensuring reliable electricity supply.
Above
all, he said, Nigerians must protect their votes and ensure that their
collective mandate is respected, insisting that democracy can only thrive when
the people’s voice is allowed to prevail.
