Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),
Babachir Lawal, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu should leave office and
focus on his health, arguing that the President is no longer fit enough to
continue leading the country.
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Lawal alleged
that Nigerians were aware of the reasons behind Tinubu's regular trips to
France and said the visits had not convinced the public otherwise. He
maintained that the President had already spent enough time in office and
should now prioritise his wellbeing.
"President Tinubu is not a healthy man. Nigerians are
not fooled when he goes to France. I've said it before. He has done four years.
He should face his health," Lawal said during the interview.
The former SGF also made personal claims about the
President's lifestyle. He alleged that Tinubu was not driven by material
possessions and said his usual breakfast consisted of bananas and groundnuts.
Lawal further claimed that the President enjoyed smoking silk cigarettes,
although he added that he did not know whether Tinubu had since stopped.
The comments come shortly after Lawal announced his
departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He had accused the party
of conducting a heavily manipulated primary election that produced former
Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate.
Neither the Presidency nor President Tinubu has publicly
responded to Lawal's latest remarks. His comments remain his personal views,
while attention is likely to remain on both the political fallout from his exit
from the ADC and any response the Presidency may choose to make.
