Zinedine Zidane is set to become the next head coach of the
France national team after Didier Deschamps confirmed he will step down
following the 2026 World Cup.
The change comes after France's 2-0 defeat to Spain in
Tuesday's World Cup semi-final, a result that ended Les Bleus' hopes of
reaching the final.
Deschamps had already announced before the tournament that
he would leave the role once France's World Cup campaign ended. His final match
in charge will now be the third-place play-off against either England or
Argentina later this week.
Football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano also confirmed
the coaching transition in a post on X, writing: "OFFICIAL: Didier
Deschamps' cycle as France head coach comes to an end. It's over."
He added that Deschamps would take charge of one final match
before saying goodbye, marking the beginning of what he described as the
"Zinedine Zidane era".
Zidane, one of France's greatest footballers, has long been
linked with the national team job. The former Real Madrid manager enjoyed major
success in club football, guiding the Spanish side to three consecutive UEFA
Champions League titles during his time in charge.
His expected appointment signals the start of a new chapter
for France as the team looks to rebuild following its World Cup exit and
prepare for future international competitions. Deschamps leaves after one of
the most successful spells in the country's history, having led France to the
2018 World Cup title and several other major tournament finals.
