NDC senatorial candidate pays homage to Oluoha XVII, receives royal prayers

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Anambra South Senatorial District, Chief Dr Ebuka Onunkwo, has called on the people of the district to prepare for a political change, saying January 16, 2027, offers them an opportunity to choose a different path.

Onunkwo spoke yesterday when he paid homage to the traditional ruler of Ihiala, HRH Igwe Sir Thomas Obidiegwu, the Oluoha XVII, during the Ihiala New Yam Festival 2026 (Iri-Ji Ihiala).

He said he came to honour the monarch because of the high regard and respect he has for him, as well as his love for the people of Ihiala.

The monarch, in turn, prayed for Onunkwo and wished him well in his political journey.

‘I will not forget Ihiala people’

Speaking during the visit, Onunkwo said the people of Ihiala remained an important part of his political vision for Anambra South.

“I will not forget Ihiala people,” he said, describing them as wonderful people who deserve better representation and leadership.

He urged the people not to allow politicians who had little or nothing new to offer to continue deceiving them.

According to him, the people must look beyond familiar political faces and ask what those seeking their votes have actually done for them and what they intend to do differently.

“January 16, 2027, is the day to make a difference in Anambra South. It is the day our people must decide that enough is enough and that we are ready to do things differently,” he said.

Onunkwo also urged the people to protect their votes when the time comes, stressing that voting alone would not be enough if the people's choices were not properly protected.

‘We cannot continue the same journey and expect a different result’

The NDC candidate said Anambra South could not continue along the same political road and expect a different result.

“If we continue on the same political journey that has not produced the result our people deserve, we will continue to find ourselves in the same situation,” he said.

He told the people that the time had come to make a deliberate decision to support a new political direction.

Onunkwo also linked his political ambition to the humanitarian and philanthropic work he has undertaken over the years.

He promised that such efforts would not stop if he was elected, but would instead be expanded across Anambra South.

“What I have been doing as a philanthropist and humanitarian is only a beginning. The effort will be doubled and strongly felt across Anambra South,” he said.

He maintained that the NDC remained the platform through which the desired change could be delivered, describing himself as the candidate prepared to carry that responsibility.

Udekigbo urges Ihiala voters to stand with NDC

Also speaking, the NDC candidate for the Ihiala Federal Constituency, Hon. Chibuzor Udekigbo, urged the people to continue embracing the NDC movement.

Udekigbo said the people had been deceived in the past and should not allow the experience to be repeated.

He appealed to them to remain firm and support the NDC candidates, saying the party offered them an opportunity to demand a different kind of representation.

The visit ended with Onunkwo paying further respects to the monarch and the traditional institution, as the community marked its New Yam Festival, a celebration of culture, harvest and communal unity.
