Peter Obi has challenged the Anambra State Government to
produce evidence that his administration left unpaid debts, salary arrears,
pension liabilities or unsettled payments to contractors when he left office.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate made
the demand on Monday in a statement published on his official social media
page, responding to fresh claims by the state government.
Obi rejected allegations that his administration left behind
inherited liabilities, including an alleged N2 billion ecological loan,
describing the claims as false and misleading.
He said his government had cleared historical gratuities and
arrears worth more than N35 billion before handing over power, insisting that
workers’ salaries, pensions and gratuities were fully settled.
According to Obi, contractors who completed and received
certification for government projects had also been paid. He therefore called
on the state government to identify any outstanding obligation allegedly linked
to his tenure.
Addressing the ecological fund, Obi said the N2 billion was
released roughly three months before the end of his administration to address
the erosion crisis affecting Oko and Umuchiana.
He said he deliberately left the money untouched because it
was tied to a specific project and should be used for that purpose by his
successor.
Obi further maintained that the ecological allocation was
separate from more than N75 billion in savings he claimed his administration
left for the incoming government.
“If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will
stop campaigning,” Obi said, challenging the state government to substantiate
its allegations with verifiable records.
