Tension
was reported in Benue State on Tuesday after suspected thugs allegedly blocked
a major road shortly after presidential candidate Peter Obi arrived in the
state.
Obi’s
media aide, Esther Umoh, raised the alarm in a statement shared on her X
account, alongside a video showing what appeared to be a road blockage.
She
said the incident happened shortly after Mr Obi and members of his entourage
entered Benue, claiming that the blockage was intended to prevent them from
gaining access to the state.
Ms
Umoh alleged that the people involved had been sponsored to disrupt the visit,
although she did not provide evidence to support the claim.
A
separate video posted by the aide appeared to show several people running
towards vehicles in the convoy.
She
alleged that the individuals were attempting to attack members of the
entourage.
However,
it was not immediately possible to independently establish the identity of
those involved, their motive or whether anyone was injured during the incident.
The
alleged confrontation took place around Boko Road, near the Air Force Base,
according to Ms Umoh.
The
development comes amid growing political activity as parties and candidates
step up engagements with voters and supporters across the country.
Mr
Obi, a former Anambra State governor, is the presidential candidate of the
Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.
No
official explanation had been given for the reported road blockage as of the
time of filing this report.
The
Benue State Government had not publicly responded to the allegation, while the
police had also yet to issue a statement on the incident.
The
circumstances surrounding the reported confrontation therefore remained
unclear, with the allegations yet to be independently verified.
